Council picks up first Catering Mark for community meals

22 April 2013

South Lanarkshire Council are the first catering service in the UK to achieve the Food for Life Catering Mark for their community meals service.

The Council’s Facilities Services achieved the prestigious bronze Food for Life Catering Mark for serving fresh, healthy and seasonal meals in their Hamilton and Blantyre lunch clubs for older people and are looking to extend this service throughout South Lanarkshire.

The Food for Life Catering Mark is the Soil Association’s prestigious national food award and the UK’s only independent certification scheme setting standards of traceability, quality and provenance for public and private sector meals and inspecting caterers to ensure that standards are met.

South Lanarkshire Council’s bronze Catering Mark ensures that everyone attending one of South Lanarkshire’s twelve daily lunch clubs can be assured that at least 75% of the dishes on the menu are freshly prepared, all meat is from farms which satisfy UK welfare standards and meals do not contain any undesirable food additives, hydrogenated fats or GM ingredients.

As well as meeting national nutritional guidelines for care settings, menus are seasonal and clear information is provided about where food comes from, including where food is sourced locally.

The Council is one of six local authorities championing the Catering Mark in Scotland and as such really is leading the way for improved public sector catering. They join a growing number of organisations across the UK pioneering the Catering Mark standards, ensuring more people have access to food that is good for them, their communities and the planet.

Chair of Community Services Committee, Councillor Hamish Stewart, commented:-“We are delighted to have achieved the Soil Association’s bronze Food for Life Catering Mark for our community meals service and especially so as we are the first community meals service in the UK to have done so.

"This is an excellent achievement and I am extremely proud of the efforts the people on our staff have made to ensure the health and wellbeing of our Hamilton and Blantyre lunch club participants and hope that we will be looking at extending the service to all of our community meals throughout South Lanarkshire.”

Currently, more than 25,000 Catering Mark meals are served across Scotland every day.
